Declaration of Ethiopian Intellectuals’ Dialogue Forum

on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Abay River

13th March 2020

We, the intellectuals based in Ethiopian universities and research institutions and others participating in this Dialogue from around the world have issued the following declaration.

1. Ethiopian intellectuals within and outside the country pledge to support our knowledge and expertise in Ethiopia’s efforts to protect its national interests in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the Abay River.

2. We will support through consultation research and studies to ensure that Ethiopia’s work on the GERD and other dams bears greater social and economic benefits.

3. We highly applaud the position taken by the Government of Ethiopia in the negotiations on the GERD and commit to supporting collectively and individually the conclusion of the negotiations by upholding the national interests of Ethiopia.

4. Our higher education institutions and the community resolve to support the work on the GERD until its completion and renew our pledge to actively engage in mobilizing the necessary resources towards this end.

5. While acknowledging that the true stakeholders of the Nile are the people of Ethiopia, the Sudan, and Egypt, we call upon our brothers and sisters in the Sudan and Egypt to raise their voice in solidarity with the Ethiopian people who share the Abay River, but are still condemned to live in darkness and poverty, and that they demand that we get a fair share of the benefits of the Abay River.

6. We declare our appreciation of the Ethiopian political parties’ and activists’ resolve to expeditiously set aside their differences and stand in solidarity with the Government in respect of its position on the GERD and call upon them to continue with Ethiopians’ most cherished and ages-old tradition of not compromising with their sovereignty even in the face of great difficulties and to strengthen their support in the pursuit of national interests.

7. Recognizing that some decisions at international platforms are made based on not just fairness and truth, but also national strength and negotiating power, we call on all sides to set aside their minor differences and collectively pursue our common national interests by refraining from any regrettable acts that undermine the rights and fundamental interests of generations to come.

8. We call upon our international partners and our African brothers and sisters to stand by Ethiopia’s side in its efforts to use its own resources and protect its natural rights and to condemn any party that undermines its rights.

Finally, we call on all Ethiopians and other citizens of Ethiopian origin to be ready to make any sacrifice necessary for the success of our people’s all-round efforts to liberate themselves from poverty.
